Elisha grapples with how she should respond to Jeremy Baxter’s use of cannabis. She is aware that for Jeremy cannabis is very important. He finds that it helps him to relax and it also possibly gives him some greater degree of acceptance and sense of ‘normality’ in his peer group.

There is research evidence and practice experience, however, that for individuals vulnerable to psychotic mental illness, cannabis can be an aggravating factor and its use can trigger psychiatric relapse. It is therefore something of a practice dilemma for Elisha. She is likely to lose credibility with Jeremy and may not be able to form an effective working relationship with him if she advocates strongly against his cannabis use; but to ignore this potentially important issue may not be in Jeremy’s best interests either.
